Why you should be excited

Wealthy is an old U.S. apple that’s long been famed for its ability to withstand harsh prairie winters.

The story of Wealthy

Although Wealthy is a much higher-quality apple than Transparent, the two varieties have something significant in common: both were once prized for an attribute unrelated to their eating quality.

Both also suffered from the eventual arrival of other varieties matching their key attribute while delivering better overall quality.

In Transparent’s case, the attribute was early ripening; for Wealthy, winter hardiness.

While it’s still highly respected a century and a half after it appeared on the scene, there are now quite a few good varieties that can survive a Minnesota winter, so Wealthy isn’t considered as uniquely precious as it once was.
