Morgan Sweet
Why you should be excited
Morgan Sweet is an old English cider apple that ripens early, ferments quickly and makes an easy-drinking cider.
The story of Morgan Sweet
English cider apples are organized into four categories, depending on their tannin and sugar/acid levels.
The sexiest varieties, at least these days, tend to fall into the bittersweet and bittersharp categories, with considerably less interest in sharps (high acid, little tannin) and sweets (low acid, low tannin).
Morgan Sweet, as its name suggests, falls into this last category and provides an interesting combination of early ripening and quick fermenting juice. In other words, you can have this one harvested, fermented and ready to drink before some of the super-late cider varieties are even off the tree.
An intriguing possibility, especially since it starts producing young and generously.
