Why you should be excited

Banane Amere is a bittersweet apple from Quebec that was discovered by cider expert Claude Jolicouer.

The story of Banane Amere

If you’ve been thinking it’s about time for a good quality bittersweet cider apple from Canada, your wait is over.

This is thanks to the expertise and boundless energy of Claude Jolicouer, author of the most excellent The New Cidermaker’s Handbook. Jolicouer found this seedling tree growing on his Quebec property and found that – while a bit stingy in providing juice – it’s an excellent addition to cider blends, with a decent level of sugar, good body and high tannins.

In fact, it’s so bitter that Jolicouer cautions cidermakers to limit it to ten per cent of a cider blend for fear of making an overly harsh cider. We’re excited to have this Canadian cider apple in our collection.
