Winesap

Why you should be excited:

Winesap is the classic favourite apple of the U.S. South. Even if it did originate in New Jersey.

apple_winesap.jpgThe story of Winesap:

If you were in the U.S. South during the 19th century and you were offered an apple to eat, there’s a pretty decent chance it was a Winesap.

This was the apple of that time and that place and for many in the South, it remains so to this day. Despite the rise and fall of Ben Davis, which was a star before Winesap. And despite the rise and now-happening fall of Red Delicious, which became the big star after Winesap.

Through all of that, Winesap continues to be revered because it's good no matter how you use it -- performing well in fresh-eating, cooking and cider-making. And it keeps well, too. On top of all that, the tree is dependable, producing good-sized crops every year.

What’s not to like about an apple with those qualities?
