Wagener

Why you should be excited:

Wagener is good for cooking soon after being picked and good for fresh eating after some time in storage.

apple_wagener.jpgThe story of Wagener:

Never underestimate the value of a true multi-purpose apple like Wagener, which is delicious cooked when it’s freshly picked and still quite sharp and then lasts wonderfully as a considerably mellower eating apple that can be good all the way into the following spring.

One apple, two distinct personae. Pretty cool, eh?

Considered one of the best U.S. fresh-eating apples and commercially important in the northeast of the USA during the later part of the 19th century, Wagener may have long since lost favour with the big guys in the industry, but it’s still got plenty of positive characteristics for us 21st century civilian apple lovers to appreciate and celebrate.
