Why you should be excited:

Violette is an extremely old French apple best known for its distinctive blue-black bloom.

This may not be a particularly well-known variety of apple, but it sure has plenty of interesting aspects.

Start with the eye-catching colouring. Some refer to it as a blue-black bloom, while others might say it's extremely dark red in colour. Either way, it won't be mistaken for your average red and green apple, that's for sure.

The crisp white flesh and brisk flavour will also win many people over, as will the tasty pink juice you can get from this variety.

On top of all that, this is an apple that works equally well for fresh-eating and for cooking. Perhaps that's why this ancient apple is still grown in northern France by discerning orchardists.

Some even say Violette's flesh is perfumed like violets...

Violette Facts

Its origins:

Unknown origins in France, sometime before the 17th century.

Flavour, aroma, texture:

The white flesh is crisp and briskly flavoured.


Notable for its blue-black bloom that's reminiscent of the colouring of a violet.

When they’re available:

Mid-season (usually in mid-September).

Quality for fresh eating:

Good. Also makes a pleasant pink-coloured juice.

Quality for cooking:


Keeping ability:

So-so (barely more than 1 month when kept refrigerated).
