Why you should be excited:

Sunrise is one of the best early-ripening apples and the proud product of breeding efforts at Summerland, B.C.

apple_sunrise.jpgThe story of Sunrise:

One of apple lovers’ great frustrations is the dearth of good options during the summer.

Sure, you can be a climate change villain and purchase fruit transported from the southern hemisphere. Or you can eat mealy old apples from the previous season. Or try a tart early-season apple that’s good for about 15 minutes after it comes off the tree.

But, there’s another option: the Sunrise.

Most years, it’s ripe in August and –- unlike most early apples –- it’s got a balance of sweet and tart. It also keeps quite nicely for a week or so, not long, but much better than most early apples.

Sunrise Facts

Its origins:

Bred in Summerland, B.C., Canada; 1990s introduction.

Flavour, aroma, texture:

Tart, but with nicely balanced sweetness. Crisp and juicy.

A medium-sized apple that's yellow-green-skinned with red blush wherever the apple has had good sun.

When they’re available:

Early season (usually in late August).

Quality for fresh eating:

Very good.

Quality for cooking:

Mainly used for fresh eating.

Keeping ability:

Minimal (about a week when kept refrigerated).
