Roter Stettiner

Why you should be excited:

Roter Stettiner is an ancient apple originating in Germany that's got a distinctively fruity flavour.

apple_roterstettiner.JPGThe story of Roter Stettiner:

This apple received its current name way back in 1776, but was already a very old variety at that point, having been recorded under a different name (De Signeur d'Hiver) about 180 years before that. And who knows how old the variety was at that point?

Now that's an ancient apple.

And for a variety to stick around that long, it's got to be special.

In this case, 'special' means a strong fruit flavour that reminds folks of melon and strawberry and continues to be powerful and distinctive long after harvest -- right into February, while also maintaining its most excellent crispness.

With characteristics like this, it's no surprise people have kept Roter Stettiner alive and producing for centuries.
