Reverend Morgan

Why you should be excited:

Reverend Morgan is an apple originating in Texas that's one of those rare varieties that does well in heat.

apple_reverendmorgan.jpgThe story of Reverend Morgan:

Some marketing genius has referred to Salt Spring island as "Canada's Hawaii," which is roughly akin to calling one of the Sahara Desert's less parched areas "Saraha's rainforest."

Let's just say, it's a stretch.

So, we admit we're pushing it to even try growing Reverend Morgan apples on Salt Spring.

This is a variety notable for having originated in hot and humid Houston, Texas and -- even with climate change -- Salt Spring's climate will never be like Houston's (thank God!).

But we're giving Reverend Morgan a try anyway, as this is reputedly a good-quality apple of nice flavour and solid disease resistance that might just ripen here as summers get longer and hotter.
