Pepin Shafrannyi

Why you should be excited:

Pepin Shafrannyi is a gorgeous apple from Russia that looks and tastes good during its brief season.

apple_pepinshafrannyi.jpgThe story of Pepin Shafrannyi:

If you think this apple looks so pretty you'd like to keep a few in storage for a while after their late summer harvest, we'd suggest that you resist the remptation to keep some around.

That's because Pepin Shafrannyi tastes as good as it looks, but only for a few weeks after harvest each year. This, of course, should not be a problem, as plenty of other delicious varieties are available later in the season.

But you might be hard-pressed to find one more appealing -- to your eye and your taste buds -- during the those few weeks in late August and September when Pepin Shafrannyi (which means 'saffron pippin') is at its best.
