Why you should be excited:

Jefferis is a pretty and tasty old U.S. apple from Pennsylvania with good natural disease resistance.

apple_jefferis.jpgThe story of Jefferis:

Today, Jefferis might be viewed as just another old apple from the U.S., but back in the day, it was something special.

The accolades began sometime after Isaac Jefferies discovered a seedling growing on his farm. In 1848, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awarded it as the best seedling and its popularity grew from there. Through all of this, there’s never been an explanation as to how the ‘e’ from Mr. Jefferies' last name was dropped from the variety name.

This variety is unacceptable to big commercial growers –- and extra desirable for home gardeners -– due to its ripening over a period of weeks. One or two apples at a time.
