Hunt Russet

Why you should be excited:

Hunt Russet is a not-so-famous apple with delicious qualities consistent with the best russets.

The story of Hunt Russet:

apple_huntrusset.jpgBack in the day, an apple's ability to keep well -- long before widespread refrigeration, let alone controlled amosphere storage -- was highly prized. When such an apple also turned out to have great flavour, well... that's something special.

So how come so few people have heard of Hunt Russet? It's considered to have top-notch russet-style flavour, with plenty of sweetness, nice acid to balance it and hints of a pear-like flavour. And folks used to say they could keep their Hunt Russets in storage for month after month and they still tasted great.

Maybe it's time to spread the word about this fine old New England apple. It's definitely an unsung apple hero.
