Harry Masters Jersey

Why you should be excited:

Harry Masters Jersey is a traditional bittersweet English cider apple, thought to be a seedling of Yarlington Mill.

The story of Harry Masters Jersey:

apple_harrymastersjersey.jpgLikely a seedling of the much-respected cider variety Yarlington Mill, Harry Masters Jersey is also considered to be a good bittersweet cider apple, as it produces a quality juice with soft, astringent tannin.

The name comes from the man thought to have discovered the variety: Mr. Masters worked as the miller at Yarlington Mill in Somerset, England. This variety is also known in Somerset as Port Wine.

While the tree is not particularly vigorous, people in the know about cider like to grow it anyway, as this is a fine variety to include in a cider blend.

It's a pretty apple, too.
