Golden Reinette

Why you should be excited:

Golden Reinette is an English old-timer that was considered a top variety back in the 19th century.

apple_goldenreinette.jpgThe story of Golden Reinette:

You know an apple’s been around for a while when it already was an ancient variety when it attained great popularity in 19th century England.

Golden Reinette has an uncertain distant history, but was very much on people’s radar (even if the concept of radar was then unknown) in the 1800s, when it was considered among the top dozen varieties for fresh eating and was renowned as a cooker in Apple Charlotte and other classic dishes.

Golden Reinette’s star might have faded over the past century, but it remains a memorable throw-back to the day when people would actually debate which apple varieties belonged on a ‘top 12’ list.
