Erwin Bauer

Why you should be excited:

Erwin Bauer is a tasty fresh-eating apple that’s big where it was first raised: eastern Germany.

apple_erwinbauer.jpgThe story of Erwin Bauer:

Here’s another apple that was slow to appear on the international scene due to its origins in one of the nations vanquished in the Second World War.

While most such examples are Japanese, this one is German.

It’s a tasty fresh eating apple that was first raised in 1928, but that didn’t get its name and introduction to the world scene until 1955.

And a whole lot happened in Germany between 1928 and 1955, as anyone who knows 20th century history is well aware.

Still popular in Germany, Erwin Bauer is a tasty apple with attractively dark colouring that catches the eye.

Some even say its tartness is reminiscent of pineapple.
