Why you should be excited:

Baldwin was one of America’s top apples in the 19th century, mainly because it travelled and stored well.

apple_baldwin.jpgThe story of Baldwin:

There aren’t many old-timers still around who will remember when the Baldwin apple ruled the roost in North America.

That’s because it’s been a while: discovered at the end of the 18th century in Massachusetts, Baldwin was big stuff through much of the 19th. This was mainly due to its keeping ability and tough skin, which protected it during transportation.

To be fair, though, Baldwin is also quite a pleasant-tasting apple. And it’s got the look that most people associate with a great apple: deeply red-coloured and fairly large.

This is an apple worth trying even if only for old-time’s sake.
